Coit Tower
By Paul Lyons
Some recent readers have written in wondering why A San Francisco Journal is rarely about San Francisco. Greg Salamatov writes, “while your essays about the Super Bowl or some long-forgotten explorer may be intriguing, where’s the info or news about San Francisco?” No need to worry Greg, this one is about Coit Tower – a great place to go in San Francisco if you have a few hours, want to look at art and experience some nice views.
While most people seem to drive to Coit Tower by driving east on Lombard Street until it runs into Telegraph Hill Boulevard and then plugging the meters in the parking lot at the top, I recommend just parking down on Embarcadero or Sansome and walking up the Filbert stairs. The walk is really not too bad and while you are going up the stairs you will probably run into the Parrots of Telegraph Hill. The small green parrots fly in large flocks and make a shrieking noise wherever they go. Great views of the Bay Bridge and the Financial District come into view as you go.
Once you are at the top or the stairs just look for the tower and find your way. To get to the top of Coit Tower you will have to pay a $5 elevator fee but take your time. On the first floor is a large mural from the 1930s when the structure came into being. This socialist inspired, Hieronymus Bosch-lik, WPA project is a lot of fun to look at with bizarre details everywhere.
When you are done you can always walk back down the stairs you came up and head on over to Pier 23 and grab a bite or drink a beer. Coit Tower. Way better than buying a t-shirt at Fisherman’s Wharf.
