While it has not rained in a long time and we are all thinking “drought” around here, the ocean waves have cooperated. For the last week the weather has been quite warm and sunny and a powerful yet organized long period swell has been in the water. Not really huge stuff but 10 feet plus waves for about a week straight. It was so much fun that one came crashing down on my back near the end of my surf window and now my lower back is feeling the pain. My local medic says I should take the over-the-counter medication – not sure if this is the stuff from the pharmacy or Bev Mo as they both seem to do the trick in their own way. See some photos from the recent swell here.

With the lack of precipitation, the snows in the Sierra from December are slowly disappearing. Kai and a group of high schoolers went up to do the terrain park thing at Boreal and had a grand time but the adult in the group noticed that the base was melting away. We will need a few good storms to roll in not only for the skiing but everything else around here. Perhaps spring skiing will be in late February this year?

As is my usual habit, I follow the professional football games only at the end of the season. These guys hit each other so hard I was feeling my bad back just watching them. I have become an Arizona Cardinal fan of late. It is not just that I usually root for the underdog, but I began to like the “gamer” quality of Kurt Warner. I saw him throw a few passes right into the hands of his receivers, watch them drop them and not blow a fuse. It was a very Zen approach the game that seems to be so important for the playoffs - the “hear and now” is all that matters.

But nevertheless, beat on your drums and pray for rain.
