Skype - The New Long Distance
By Paul Lyons
I think of all the technologies available to consumers, one that is not getting enough notice is IP phone technology. Skype, which was acquired from Ebay, is simply amazing and should have all the major phone companies really wondering who is going to pay the mortgage next month. The concept is that when you call your mom in Napa, CA to wish her a happy birthday, you call her from your computer, not your phone.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype Skype (pronounced to rhyme with "type") is a proprietary peer-to-peer Internet telephony (VoIP) network founded by the entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, also founders of the file sharing application Kazaa. It competes against existing open VoIP protocols such as SIP, IAX, and H.323. The Skype Group, acquired by eBay in October 2005, is headquartered in Luxembourg, with offices in London and Tallinn. It has experienced rapid growth in both popular usage and software development since launch, both of its free and its paid services.
The only reason people would still use there landline, ala regular phone, for long distance calls is that they simply do not know that there is no need to pay the phone company for these calls. You can call from your computer for free!
From Guatemala to the US with Skype, the sound is definitely clearer. In the early versions of Skype there were problems with delay but with the present version of Skype this is no longer a problem.
One can also take Skype to the next level and use the video feature as well. Webcams start at around $25. One simply hooks them up to the S-Video port on your computer and now you can call your mom and she can see that you have not shaved in five days.
